Social Programs

Mid-Hudson Community Senior Services provides daily socialization opportunities for seniors, including hot lunches, exercise classes, lectures, group outings and more, to help keep participants active and in good spirits. Luncheons and social programs are held regularly twice a week for several hours. Shopping excurisions and other special events are held monthly. For those with physical limitations, Mid-Hudson Community Seniors provides daily meals, arranges in-home visits and individual outings, as well as transportation when needed. Transportation for all of our programs is provided by our handicapped accessible vans, if necessary.

Outreach and Support

Since many seniors are homebound and need additional assistance and support, we provide outreach services through our network of elderly volunteers. These volunteers provide not only companionship and friendship, they also assist the senior with daily life skills that may be to difficult to perform. For example, the volunteer may help the senior with simple household tasks such as getting the mail, paying bills, balancing checkbooks, cleaning, and making appointments. The volunteer also acts as a safety net or watch dog to ensure that the senior is physically and emotionally healthy, fully functional, and capable of living independently. This association with a “peer” is vital not only to maintaining a sense of dignity and independence, but also to practical living.

Health Monitoring

Mid-Hudson Community Senior Services provides free blood pressure and blood sugar screening for the elderly through trained volunteers. Individuals who are then found to be at risk are referred to their physicians, while those with preexisting conditions are constantly monitored.

Exercise Programs

Mid-Hudson Community Senior Services participants meet twice weekly – with their doctors’ consent - for workouts on commercial-quality treadmills and bicycles, and to join group stretching and hand weights activities. A trained exercise consultant helps each participant reach his/her health goals and individual workout capacity.

Transportation

Mid-Hudson Community Senior Services provides free bus and shuttle transportation. This transportation is available not only to allow the seniors to participate in our programs, seniors may also request special transportation arrangements for planned shopping excursions, transportation to all of the major area hospitals in New York City, as well as to local physicians, medical appointments, and medical or rehabilitation facilities.

Luncheons

Mid-Hudson Community Senior Services hosts special luncheons twice a week for seniors who appreciate a delicious meal and a chance to gather with friends. At this lunch, there is generally a speaker or special activities. Mid-Hudson Community Senior Services provides door to door transportation. Meals are sent home to those seniors who are unable to attend.

Lending Library

For many seniors who are not mobile, there comes a time when they would like some entertainment within their own home. Mid-Hudson Community Senior Services has an extensive lending library of books, DVDs and DVD players that are available to be given to a home bound senior for a specific period of time. This entertainment helps alleviate the boredom and loneliness for those living on their own.
